2024 Edition

Each year, Les Festivals de Wallonie choose 1 or 2 artists, strong personalities from the cultural world, who perform programs in accordance with the theme in an interdisciplinary matter, in all of the federated festivals; whether an original work or a renowned piece. This year's associate artists are Vox Luminis and Gwendoline Blondeel!

Gwendoline Blondeel

Artiste Associé(e)

We first got to know Gwendoline Blondeel in 2018. This was prior to her spell at the MM Academy at La Monnaie and before she joined the Jeune Ensemble of the Grand Théâtre de Genève and won the Concours de Froville in 2019. Her remarkable vocal qualities soon took her far from her native Belgium, bringing her into contact with renowned conductors and performing alongside internationally established musicians and ensembles on some of the world’s leading stages. The purity and precision of her voice quickly made her a sought-after interpreter of the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Gwendoline has been invited to take part in productions conducted by William Christie, Leonardo Garcìa Alarcon, Alexis Kossenko and Christophe Rousset. Far from confining herself to this repertoire alone, however, Gwendoline, driven by curiosity, has continued to broaden her field of interest. Her passion for styles that are sometimes poles apart and her ability to successfully perform a variety of roles in a no less varied range of musical genres led us to invite her to Les Festivals de Wallonie as our associate artist. In Brussels and Stavelot, Gwendoline will perform a cycle of songs written by a contemporary composer (Le Bestiaire périmé by Jean-Luc Fafchamps). She will sing Schubert in another concert, again in Stavelot. In Namur and the Hainaut, she will team up once more with some of the musicians of Cappella Mediterranea, in a small line-up, to deliver a dazzling Song of Heaven and Earth. Elsewhere, she will join the singers and musicians of Vox Luminis, who are also closely associated with this 2024 edition of Les Festivals de Wallonie, for a concert version of two of Purcell’s most memorable operas: The Fairy Queen and King Arthur. So many opportunities to enjoy the flamboyance of the comet that is Gwendoline Blondeel before she lights up other horizons! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to watch her perform …

Vox Luminis

Artiste Associé(e)

Vox Luminis is celebrating its 20th anniversary! It was founded two decades ago by Lionel Meunier, who has since led this Belgian ensemble in accordance with his artistic vision. Vox Luminis performs some seventy concerts a year, in Belgium and abroad (France, Spain, UK, US, Asia, etc.). With two well-deserved Gramophone Awards to its name for two remarkable recordings (of works by Schütz and Buxtehude), the ensemble, which specializes in English, Italian and German music from the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth century, has continued to reach out to audiences over the years, giving them the opportunity to enjoy the masterpieces of these repertoires as well as previously unheard gems. Driven by a policy of historically informed transmission, the ensemble seeks to make excellence available to as many people as possible. In twenty years, Vox Luminis has travelled a long and beautiful road, establishing its reputation on the international stage, diversifying its programmes and being regularly invited to prestigious festivals and venues all over the world: from London’s Wigmore Hall to Barcelona’s Palau de la Musica, from New York City’s Lincoln Center to Berlin’s Philharmonie, from the Aldeburgh Festival to Bachfest Leipzig, from the Festival de Saintes to that of Utrecht and … Les Festivals de Wallonie! Whether productions for an ensemble of soloists with instrumental continuo (such as those that originally forged the ensemble’s DNA in 2004) or exceptional programmes gathering more than forty musicians and singers on stage (including a Belgian premiere of a version of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen combining music, text and images!), Les Festivals de Wallonie have decided to offer Lionel Meunier and Vox Luminis a special kind of residency as part of their anniversary celebrations. Because no matter how far you travel, there is no place like home!
