Pascal Quignard made Marin Marais the hero of his novel Tous les matins du monde, superbly performed on the big screen by Gérard Depardieu and his son Guillaume. For this concert, Robin Pharo and his ensemble Près de votre oreille have selected a few pieces from Marais’s Fourth Book of Pieces for bass viola da gamba and basso continuo. The work bears the mysterious title Suite d’un goût étranger. Is the use of the adjective étranger to be seen as a reference to a marriage of Italian and French styles in which the French Dance Suite tends to merge with Italian concertante art?
