Clara Schumann played a major role in the conception and creation of these two works. She was the first to perform her husband’s masterpiece with the musicians of the Leipzig Gewandhaus. And she was the one who, 20 years later, encouraged Brahms to rework the piece he had just written for a string quintet. On the third attempt, it was a success! The work, in its piano quintet version (in line with Schumann’s), was warmly received and will remain forever in the pantheon of nineteenth-century masterpieces.
