The Bethlem Royal Hospital was established in London in the seventeenth century. Commonly known as Bedlam, it was the first psychiatric hospital in the Western world, a place of fantasy and inspiration for Purcell and his contemporaries. Bertrand Cuiller and the musicians of Le Caravansérail plunge us into the dreamlike and extreme world of London theatre, salons and taverns. Crazy arias, stage music, wild dances and fantasies make up the five imaginary tableaux of this rendition, illuminated by the voice of a guest star of choice, soprano Rachel Redmond.
