Carlo Gesualdo was undoubtedly a colourful figure in the history of music. His life was a mixture of honour killings and adulterous love affairs, religiosity and witchcraft, aristocracy and transgression. While he may have turned into a myth, Gesualdo was above all one of the greatest madrigalists of his time, pushing polyphonic art to its extremes, an art that is still astonishing to the ears of today’s listener. For its return to Liège, La Compagnia del Madrigale proposes to examine his career as well as the musical heritage that influenced other composers of his time.
