In his lifetime, Bach brought stylistic innovations to a musical tradition that was coming to an end and these were then adopted by all the composers that followed, from his own sons to Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, etc. and the composers of the Romantic period. The most typical example of his innovations was a form that can be said with certainty to have been invented by him: the sonata for a melodic instrument (Bach played the violin, flute and viola da gamba) and a concertante keyboard (in his case, the harpsichord).
