More information

In 1705, having scarcely turned 20, Johann Sebastian Bach, at the time an organist in the small town of Arnstadt, set out on a 400-kilometre journey to Lübeck in order to meet the greatest organist of northern Europe, Dietrich Buxtehude. What advice might Buxtehude have given Bach? What has been established is that on Bach’s return to Arnstadt, the disconcerting changes in his musical style aroused the wrath of the authorities. His music grew more complex, and its unusual variations unnerved his listeners.
