The revelation of the 2017 edition of Les Nuits de Septembre, Costantino Mastroprimiano performs Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ in a version which replaces the biblical texts with letters written by Jewish concentration-camp prisoners during World War II, read by the actress Annie Dutoit. Mirroring this, the music of Joseph Martin Kraus, a genius greatly admired by Haydn, and who spent most of his career in Sweden.
